the hen and the golden eggs

On a farm one day, a hen did lay a single golden egg!

Look!

cried the farmer to his wife-
behold:

our biddy can turn runny yoke into solid gold!

where one came from then I would say
a dozen more must surely lay!

said the grabby woman to her spouse-
why wait for her to hatch another
when we could line our nest today
with what she has inside her?!

and so the farmer took his axe
and chopped the chicken clean in half!

But no more golden eggs were ever found,
and so the two fell on the ground

and each began to howl
Now poorer for their greedy ways
than they were before they’d gone afoul.
